Waiting for news about a court case is stressful. People often want to check for themselves when the next date is or whether a decision has been made. Malaysia's judiciary has several official online services, each with a different purpose.
Understanding your case number
Every case has a number printed on the court documents. Malaysian case numbers usually combine:
- letters for the state and court location;
- a code for the court and type of case;
- a running number; and
- the month and year of filing.
Keep your case number handy. You will need it for any search and when contacting the court.
Official online services
| Service | What it does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| File Online Search (eCourt Services) | View documents in a court file | Official guidance states it is for civil cases only and requires purchasing a ticket; Court of Appeal and Federal Court searches cover cases registered under e-Filing from 10 July 2017 |
| e-Judgment portal | Search and read written grounds of judgment | Not every case has written grounds |
| Court document QR verification | Check whether a court document is genuine | Listed by the MyGovernment portal as available for court documents issued in Peninsular Malaysia |
| e-Filing System (EFS) | Filing of documents | Used mainly by lawyers |
The MyGovernment portal also lists services such as e-PG for pleading guilty online to certain traffic offences and eJamin for paying bail online.
Have a question about your own situation? Ask on WhatsApp
Why ask your lawyer?
Your lawyer receives notices from the court and the other side, and may have dates that are not yet visible online. Lawyers also see case management directions through e-Review. A short message to your lawyer is often faster and more reliable than searching yourself.
Beware of scams
Scammers sometimes pretend to be court officers, police or lawyers and send fake "court documents" or demand payment. Courts do not ask you to transfer money to a personal account to settle a case. Check documents using the official QR verification service and call the court using contact details from the official portal. If you have been targeted, call the National Scam Response Centre at 997. See money mule accusations.
What should I keep?
- Your case number and the court's name.
- Copies of every notice of hearing and order.
- A calendar of dates, shared with anyone who must attend, such as your bailor.
Common mistakes: relying on unofficial websites, trusting phone calls from "court officers" demanding money, and missing a date because you assumed it would be shown online.
When to speak to a lawyer
If you are unsure of your next date, received a document you think may be fake, or have missed a date. You can contact us; every case depends on its facts.
